Root Canal
Let’s Get You Out of Pain
Severe decay, injury and extensive dental work can all cause the tooth’s pulp tissue to become damaged or infected. And, as anyone who’s ever experienced unrelenting, throbbing tooth pain before can tell you, it’s not fun…at all. While root canals have gotten a bad rap, thanks to modern dental techniques and technology, the procedure is actually no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. By getting rid of the infection, root canal treatment, technically called endodontics, can help to save your natural tooth and eliminate your pain. If you think you need a root canal, schedule a visit with a Fraser Street dentist at Nest today.

Take a Deep Breath
We know the thought of getting endodontic treatment, or a root canal, can be intimidating. You’ll be happy to know that things are done a whole lot differently today, especially at our Vancouver dental studio. To put your mind at ease, let’s walk through what you can expect when getting a root canal at our practice:
What is a root canal?
Root canal treatment (called endodontics in dentist-speak) is a set of specialized procedures used to treat issues with the soft pulp tissue inside of a tooth. When performing a root canal, our Vancouver dentist, Dr. Sahi, removes the infected or inflamed pulp (you’ll be numb!). She then carefully cleans and disinfects the pulp chamber and root canals before filling and sealing the tooth. The procedure is designed to eliminate the infection, prevent reinfection, stop pain and save your natural tooth.
Why do I need a root canal?
Root canals are necessary when the soft pulp tissue inside of a tooth is damaged, inflamed or infected. This can happen when a tooth is cracked, has deep decay or has undergone extensive dental work. The pulp contains connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels, which is why a problem there can be super painful. Eventually, the pain might go away, at least temporarily, but that doesn’t mean the infection is gone.
Root canal treatment eliminates the pain and infection. Without treatment, the infection can spread and affect the supporting tissue and jawbone, resulting in tooth loss and a loss of bone structure. It can also lead to a dental abscess and potentially cause systemic problems in other areas of your body.
Does a root canal hurt?
You’ll be given anesthesia, so you won’t actually feel anything during the root canal procedure. Some patients also opt for sedation. These days, getting a root canal is comparable to getting a filling. Once the anesthesia wears off, your tooth might be mildly sore for a day or two. If needed, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever (whatever you’d take for a headache) to manage discomfort.
How do I know if I need a root canal?
Some of the signs you need a root canal include:
- Sensitivity to hot and cold that lasts even after the trigger has been removed
- Severe pain while biting or chewing
- A pimple(s) on your gums
- A cracked or chipped tooth
- Swollen, tender and/or darkening gums
- Constant pain and feeling of pressure in your mouth
- Deep decay
