So, it’s been a while since your last dental exam and cleaning. Or maybe you’re trying to find a new Vancouver dentist. Whatever brings you here, I’m glad you stopped by.
In this post, I’ll be walking you through what to expect at your first dentist appointment at Nest. This will give you a glimpse into how we do dentistry differently. And, if you’re feeling anxious about getting back in the dental chair, knowing exactly what will happen can help ease the jitters.
Step 1: Come on in
My team and I love our space, and we know you will too! I wanted the practice to feel like a cozy retreat and the custom-renovated office is comfortable, pretty and a little bit luxe. It’s also fully equipped with technology and features, including digital impressions and medical-grade HEPA filter air purifiers for your comfort and safety.
With digital processes, we keep wait times to a minimum, but if you arrive early, sit back, relax and soak up the soothing vibes.
Step 2: Head to your private treatment suite
When it’s time for your dental check-up, a friendly team member will take you to your private treatment suite. Yup, floor-to-ceiling enclosed rooms is how we do it. We’ll give you a pair of Bose wireless headphones and set up your favourite TV show, music or podcast, so you can escape while we work on your smile.
Step 3: We’ll get your smile sparkling clean
Depending on the reason for your visit and your overall oral health, we might take quick, low-dose, digital x-rays. An experienced dental hygienist will chat with you about your health history and concerns. If you’re visiting the dentist for a teeth cleaning, we’ll get started.
The hygienist will use special tools to remove hardened plaque and tartar. They’ll then gently and thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. They’ll be able to let you know how you’re doing with your oral hygiene routine and if they see any room for improvement (don’t worry, it’s a judgment-free zone here).
Step 4: I’ll perform a dental exam
When your cleaning is complete, I’ll come in for the exam and we’ll get to know each other a little bit. What does a dental exam consist of? I’m glad you asked. During the check-up, I’ll:
- Look at your teeth for decay, breakage, wear, damaged fillings, etc.
- Assess your gums to ensure they’re healthy and there aren’t any signs of gum disease
- Carefully evaluate your head, jaw, neck and the soft tissues of the mouth for signs of oral cancer
- Check your bite (the way the upper and lower teeth come together)
- Examine your dental x-rays if you had them taken
- Talk with you about your oral health, past and present, and any concerns you have
- Use images or our intraoral camera to walk you through my findings (if there are any!)
- Provide personalized recommendations for homecare
- Answer your questions
- If you do have cavities or issues that require treatment, I’ll explain your options, work with you to create a treatment plan that fits your budget and schedule and fill you in on the next steps
Step 5: Get some Nest swag for a job well done
While I am a Fraser Street family dentist and I do treat kids as well, I don’t leave adults out of the fun. Whatever your age, we’ll send you off with a few treats. You earned it!
What if I come in for something other than a dental exam and cleaning?
Awesome! At Nest Dental, we offer consultations for cosmetic dentistry, wisdom teeth, Invisalign®, whitening, BOTOX® and dental implants. If your first visit is a consultation, we’ll skip the cleaning. I’ll still do an exam and take a look at any diagnostic records to determine if you’re a candidate for the treatment you’re interested in.
I’ll go over your options and what to expect before answering any questions. A team member will then discuss your insurance, our fees and your financing options.
As a Vancouver emergency dentist, there’s always space in the schedule for urgent visits even if it’s your first time at the office. Depending on the situation, we may take digital x-rays of the affected area.
I’ll talk with you about the issue and your symptoms and perform an exam. My goal is always to get you out of pain as fast as possible. Once you’re comfortable, I’ll give you homecare instructions to speed up healing or go over further treatment if it’s needed.
How long is a dental visit?
A professional cleaning and exam for existing patients takes 60 minutes, while for new patients it’s about 120 minutes. Emergency exams and consultations are 30 minutes.
